This resource calls for the Ontario government and law enforcement to end the ESA's monopoly, cut fees across the board.

Limit its absolute power. Investigate and stop the alleged criminal abuse of that power and unjust self-enrichment.

Expose fundamental flaws that deteriorate safety causing more accidents, fires, and fatalities.

ESA overcharges electricians, homeowners, general contractors & puts at risk all Ontarians

Do you think that high-salaried ESA bureaucrats are abusive and monopolistic? Do you think they have created a perfect scam, allowing them to charge unreasonably high fees under the cover of law? Do you think the ESA executives have crafted the law to legalize immoral, self-enriching practices, or crimes?

It's very simple. An electrician or electrical contractor must pass a mandatory inspection every time he installs an extra light fixture or adds a switch in your home. It is an expensive inspection, minimum $79 + HST on top of the cost of work.

Do you think $89 HST incl. charge for a 3 to 7 minute long inspector's visit is a de facto robbery? Does the ESA hits us all: customers, electricians, public in general and its safety with one stone?

Homeowners simply refuse to pay a total of $160 to $250 for adding a single outlet or installing a couple of extra new outlet boxes and light fixtures. This is why almost all small and mid size residential work goes underground and ends up un-inspected. Instead of licensed electricians it is now done by clueless handymen, making everybody and everything unsafe.

On top of that Electrical Safety Authority orders that to work as a self-employed residential electrician, one must obtain 3 licenses and pay tens of thousands of dollars (or earn less) over 7 or more years just for the right to start working as a mundane self-employed home electrician.

Guess who is eventually paying all these costs? You are. Ontario homeowners, renovators, general contractors, everybody contributes into high salaries and comprehensive benefits of the ESA staff.

  1. Is $89 too much to pay for a single light fixture inspection?
  2. Do you think $89 fee is too much to pay Electrical Safety Authority for a single wall plug inspection on top of paying the electrician for his work of installing it?
  3. Do you think the mandatory $89 inspection fee for installing one light switch is a scam, extortion, or a dirty trick?
  4. Do you think ESA is a semi-parasitic, semi-criminal entity that is acting legally in Ontario?
  5. Do you think you should fight them?

Tell the ESA what you think ESA.Cambridge@electricalsafety.on.ca

Ask your MPP.

Email the Minister directly Ms. Lisa M Thompson. Or visit web site of the Minister of Government and Consumer Services, who is accountable for the ESA activities.

Or publicly share your own story if you experienced weird ESA rules, abuse, neglect, unfair treatment, overcharge, crime, etc. Or join us in a class action and sue the ESA if you think they are parasites!

When a bunch of abused folks speaks out, nothing happens.

If there are hundred or thousand of us, we will prevail and restore the common sense and fairness!

Your voice is an extremely powerful tool. But only if it is used and heard.

So, do you think we should collect signatures and petition the ESA?

Or should we hold a referendum and simply order ESA to do what is right?

ESA will never give up fantastic salaries and huge benefits until we refuse to be their cash cows. They will milk us all dry if YOU and I don't stop them in court. So how committed are you to winning?

  1. I had an electrician change my electrical panel. The inspector arrived when the electrician was half way through the job.

Inspector did not look at what the electrician was doing and what he was being paid to inspect but the inspector questioned me about the wiring in my rec room that I had done myself.

And the inspector told me to get a permit and he would come back and inspect it.

I had the electrician have a look at what I had done and it cost me $150 more for the permit and the inspection which the inspector did not inspect after I told him that the electrician had checked it.

I can understand them having a minimum charge. My objection is when they charge the money but do not do the inspection.
