ESA reports are constantly blowing trumpet about achievements and improvements. But the same reports often mislead, hide, or do not mention its failures. Why?
The Ontario Electrical Safety Report 13 EDITION 2013, page 10 or 12, 2.1 Electrocutions and Electrical Burn Fatalities, chart - 2 Number of Electrical-Related Fatalities in Ontario, 2004-2013 shows a 450% higher Number of Electrical-Related Fatalities, from 2 in previous 2012 to 9 in 2013. (See the same chart 2 below).
The 2013 number of 9 fatalities was 30% to 450% greater than that of any of the 5 preceding years.
So instead of acknowledging the actual catastrophic failure in 2013, the ESA has reported a 25% reduction in the number of fatalities. ESA gave a deceptive and false sadistic "Conclusion: 25% reduction in the number of electrical-related fatalities since 2006." Terrible for the victims but so convenient for the ESA executives!
*NOTE, the 2006 was a single year in a decade with the higher number of deaths!
In 2013, there were 18 electrical-related and electrical fire fatalities in Ontario, a 257% increase from seven deaths the previous year! (see page 9 or page 10 (page 11 or page 12) of the ESA fiscal 2014 annual report).
Moreover, the 2013 Fiscal Year-end Annual Report does not even mention a total of 18 fatalities that year! Why is ESA so shy about publishing a dramatic increase in fatalities?
Instead of sounding an alarm and raising grave concern, instead of grieving and explaining the terrible failure, the 2013 Fiscal Year-end Annual Report has a total of 178 cheerful, joyful, and victorious words like achieved and achievements (49 times), success (14 times), progress (22 times), improve and improving (43 times). As well as decrease (18 times) or reduce (32 times) in most cases related to fewer incidents, injuries, fatalities, fires, etc.
A question, what was the ESA celebrating in that report having 18 deaths and a HUGE increase in fatalities on its hands?
An answer. Who cares about the dead? ESA celebrated the 2013 results because it achieved:
Increase in net assets
Growth in salaries, wages, benefits
Greater investments comparing to 2012
Excess of revenue over expenses for the year
Growth in the total employee future benefit assets
Is the following chart a mistake, omission, or a misrepresentation of fact? Or is it just another example of hiding the truth? Just one of the ESA's countless big and small criminal acts?
These tricks in reports, other alleged abuses and crimes, could lead to much greater and continuous adverse consequences for the safety and mortality rate in Ontario.
Families of the victims, get together and take the ESA to court for lies and for failing to protect your loved ones!
ESA it must stop lying about successes while hiding failures. Tell the ESA, you want the truth. ESA.Cambridge@electricalsafety.on.ca
